I’m so excited for this.
Red Horn has been a long time coming. It’s one of those stories, that is on the tip of my tongue but I couldn’t figure out how to express it fully. It’s gone through about a dozen iterations and formats. Finally, all the pieces are falling together. With any luck, I’d like to turn the completed story into a graphic novel. But if you want that to happen, I’m going to need your support and feedback.
Red Horn is an exploration of how generational trauma, both direct and indirect, shapes our world. Layering aspects of the distant past that our protagonist is not fully aware of and how it affects his present was the trickiest part and why it went through so many variations of the story. Originally I was thinking of writing this book like a documentary merged with found footage to create this context. But it felt like I was losing the present to the scale of lore surrounding Red Horn. I wanted the characters to come forward more. I wanted the reader to be present with everyone as aspects of the past were revealed in the present, and how often we are not aware of all information before we make decisions. Often the decision is already made for us in life, but we go forward as if we had any say in it to begin with. It wasn’t until I really started to pick apart Junji Ito’s Uzumaki that I figured out how I wanted to tell this story.
RED Horn
Victor Ours feels like he is stuck living someone else’s life. His parents and grandmother have always told him he is the future of their small, rural town of Red Horn, Wisconsin. But, after his grandmother’s passing and high school graduation around the corner, Victor is feeling more distant from everyone, his dreams of metal god glory, and escaping his hometown. As Victor fights against his family for control of his life, strange creatures and a trail of dead bodies lead him further into the mysterious origins of Red Horn and his lineage.
It’s death or freedom, as Victor fights against a fate that is centuries in the making.
